The over-reliance of South African social work on Euro-American and British texts, and the need for indigenous social work education and practice, has long been recognised by such luminaries as Mupedziswa, (1) Osei-Hwedie, (2) Kuse, (3) Triegaardt, (4) Bar-On, (5) and Gray, Coates and Yellow Bird, (6) among others. In response to this awareness as well as in reaction to the residual apartheid-rooted welfare system, an alternative indigenous, progressive and nonformal social service movement emerged in the 1980s.
